A Simple Conversation with Jesus

A foundational prayer guide for anytime, designed to help you draw near to Jesus and bring your whole self—gratitude, struggles, and requests—into his presence.

Anytime General
5–12 min

Welcome. This is simply time for you to sit with Jesus and talk with him about what's on your heart, whatever that might be right now.

Adoration

Begin by turning your attention to Jesus himself. You don't need fancy words—just notice who he is. You might think about a time when you felt his presence, or a quality of his character that has steadied you. Maybe it's his faithfulness, his gentleness, or the way he sees you fully and loves you anyway. As the apostle John writes, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1, ESV). Take a moment to simply tell Jesus what draws you to him. It could be as simple as: *Jesus, you are faithful. You are here with me.* Let yourself be quiet if words fade. Worship isn't about saying the right thing—it's about turning toward him and letting yourself be amazed.

Confession

Now, gently invite the Holy Spirit to show you what's between you and Jesus right now. This isn't about shame or rehearsing old failures. It's about honesty. Is there something you've done that weighs on you? A way you've turned away from him, or from someone he loves? A corner of your heart you've kept locked? As Paul reminds us, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, ESV). You are safe here. Talk to Jesus about what comes to mind. You might say: *Jesus, I've been carrying this, and I need to lay it down. I'm sorry.* Let yourself feel his nearness even in the confession—that's the point. He's not distant or disappointed. He's the one who already knows, and he's still here.

Thanksgiving

Move into gratitude by noticing what's true even now. This doesn't mean pretending hard things aren't hard. It means letting your eyes land on what Jesus has already done and provided. Perhaps it's breath in your lungs, a person who loves you, a small moment of peace, or his promise that he will never leave you. The psalmist understood this: "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:18, ESV). As you sit here, what comes to mind? You might pray: *Thank you for... for your presence with me... for the way you care.* Even naming one small thing opens your heart to see his goodness more clearly.

My Concerns

Finally, bring your requests to Jesus. Tell him what you need, what you're hoping for, what you're afraid of, what you're working toward. He invites this. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6, ESV). You don't need to soften your words or hide what's real. Ask for help, healing, wisdom, peace, guidance, or simply his presence in the days ahead. You might say: *Jesus, I need you to help me with... Would you give me...* When you finish, you could simply rest in the truth that he has heard you, that he cares about what you care about, and that he is already at work—even if you can't see it yet.
