Before the Meetings: A Morning Prayer
A prayer guide to center yourself before a day of meetings. You'll bring your hopes, concerns, and need for wisdom to Jesus as you prepare to show up fully in conversations ahead.
Morning
Before a big moment
5–12 min
Adoration
Start by turning your attention to Jesus himself—not the meetings, not the nerves, but to him. Notice something true about his character this morning. Perhaps it's that he knows every person you'll encounter today. Or that he is calm, unrushed, infinitely patient. You might pray something like: "Jesus, I see you as patient and present. You don't skim over details or rush conversations. I want to be more like that today." As Paul writes, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7, ESV). Let those words settle into you. What does it mean that he has given you a sound mind—clarity, not chaos—for today?
Confession
Here's an honest place: what are you carrying into these meetings that isn't yours to carry? Maybe you're trying to control how others respond. Maybe you're afraid of being seen as insufficient or unprepared. Maybe you're holding onto frustration from a previous conversation. Don't gloss over this. Name it gently to Jesus. "I confess I'm anxious about being enough in that meeting." Or "I'm still hurt from what was said last time." He already knows—he invites you to say it out loud anyway, because speaking it breaks its power. As it says in 1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (ESV). Your worry, your defensiveness, your need to win—these are welcome on his table.
Thanksgiving
Before you ask for anything, pause to notice what's already true. You've made it to this morning. You have breath in your lungs. Someone believes in you enough to have scheduled these meetings. There may be people in these conversations who genuinely want to listen. Thank Jesus for what's already here, not what's missing. You might say: "I'm grateful that you give me another chance to show up authentically today. Thank you for the people I'll meet with—I trust you're at work in their hearts too." The psalmist reminds us, "In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:18, ESV). Thanksgiving isn't about pretending meetings are easy—it's about noticing that even in the midst of them, God is good and present.
My Concerns
Now bring your specific needs. Ask Jesus for what you actually need in these meetings: clarity in your thinking, courage to speak the truth you need to speak, humility to listen well, wisdom to know when to be direct and when to be gentle. You might pray: "Give me words that are both honest and kind. Help me listen more than I defend. Show me where I can build something good in these conversations." Jesus invites you into this—"Ask and it will be given to you" (Matthew 7:7, ESV). Don't make your request small or safe. Ask for the grace to show up as yourself, fully present, not performing. Ask for the meetings to bear good fruit, not just for you, but for everyone in the room.
