Adoration
Start by simply noticing who Jesus is—not for what he can do for you right now, but for who he is. He is the one who knows every path before you walk it. The prophet Isaiah writes that Jesus is "wonderful in counsel and mighty in power" (Isaiah 9:6, ESV). In this quiet hour, let yourself marvel at a God who sees what you cannot yet see, who holds wisdom that reaches beyond your own understanding. You might simply tell him: "Jesus, you are wise. You see what I cannot. I trust that you know the way." There's no rush here—just let your heart rest in the truth that the God guiding you is not confused, not caught off guard, and not far away.
Confession
Now, gently bring the places where you've been trying to find your own way. Perhaps you've been anxious about decisions, or you've charged ahead without asking him. Maybe you've doubted that his guidance would actually come, or you've been afraid to follow where he might lead. Jesus invites you into honesty here—not shame, but truthfulness. He says, "Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, ESV). Your weariness from trying to figure it all out on your own, your fear, your small moments of distrust—these are exactly what he's asking you to lay down. Speak them simply: "Jesus, I confess I've been carrying this alone. I've been afraid. Help me turn toward you." His response is not anger; it's the relief of a burden finally set down.
Thanksgiving
Before you ask for what comes next, pause and thank him for what he's already shown you. Thank him for the ways he's guided you in the past—even the small ones, even the quiet ones you might have almost missed. He says through the psalmist, "You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy" (Psalm 16:11, ESV). Thank him that he doesn't leave you in darkness. Thank him for this moment itself, for the quietness of evening that lets you think clearly. Thank him that he cares about your next step enough to meet you here. You might say: "Jesus, thank you for every time you've guided me before. Thank you that you're here with me now."
My Concerns
Now bring your need for guidance to him with an open heart. Not as a demand, but as a question brought to a friend. Tell him what decision or direction weighs on you. Be specific: the choice you're facing, the uncertainty that's unsettled you, the desire you're holding. Then ask him not just for an answer, but for himself—for clarity, for peace, for a sense of his presence as you move forward. Jesus taught us to ask, and promised that "if any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault" (James 1:5, NIV). As you wait in this prayer, you might also ask: "What do I need to see about myself or this situation? What do you want me to know?" Listen. Not for a voice necessarily, but for the quiet stirring of peace, or a verse that comes to mind, or a next small step that becomes clear. End by saying something like: "Jesus, guide me. Show me your way. Help me trust you enough to follow."
