Adoration
Begin by turning your attention to the One who knows the way ahead. Jesus described Himself as the light of the world—and right now, in this quieter hour, you might thank Him for being exactly that. You could pray something like: "Jesus, I'm grateful that You aren't distant or unclear about who You are. You're the same Jesus who walked with Your disciples through confusion and doubt, and who promised that Your sheep hear Your voice." Take a moment to sit with that truth. He doesn't hide Himself from those who seek Him. As John writes, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" (John 8:12, NIV). In this evening hour, acknowledge that this light—this clarity—belongs to the One you're about to talk with.
Confession
Now bring the weight of not-knowing into the open. You might have been carrying anxiety about a decision, or frustration that God hasn't made the path obvious yet. That's real, and it's worth naming. Talk to Jesus about where you've tried to figure things out on your own strength, where you've leaned on your own understanding instead of trusting Him. There's no judgment here—just honesty. As Proverbs reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5, NIV). You've probably leaned on your own understanding more than once. That's human. Tell Him about it. Ask Him to soften any pride or fear that keeps you from waiting on His wisdom.
Thanksgiving
Even in the midst of uncertainty, there are gifts to notice. You might thank Jesus for the people He's placed in your life—those whose counsel you trust. Thank Him for the peace that sometimes comes in small moments, or for the clarity He's already given you about other things. Thank Him that seeking His guidance is even possible, that He cares enough to speak to those who belong to Him. Psalm 37:4 says, "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4, NIV). Pause and name one or two things—however small—that show His faithfulness in your life so far. These aren't distractions from your question; they're reminders that the One you're asking is trustworthy.
My Concerns
Now, gently and without rush, bring your specific situation to Jesus. You don't need perfect words—just honesty. "Jesus, I'm facing [this decision / this unclear path / this moment]. I don't know which way is right. Help me to hear You. Give me wisdom that goes beyond what I can figure out on my own." You might ask Him to make the right path clearer, to remove obstacles to understanding, or simply to help you trust Him while you wait. Remember James 1:5: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5, NIV). He invites this. Sit quietly for a moment after you ask—not to manufacture an answer, but to remain open. Sometimes His guidance comes as a quiet knowing, sometimes through a conversation you'll have tomorrow, sometimes through Scripture that suddenly makes sense. Tell Him you're willing to listen, and that you trust Him to guide you in His timing.
