Evening Prayer in the Midst of Difficulty
A gentle prayer guide for evening, when the weight of a difficult day settles in. This guide helps you bring your honest struggles to Jesus and find rest in His presence, even when answers aren't clear.

Going through something hard
5–12 min
Adoration
Begin by noticing who Jesus is, even in this hard moment. He is not distant from your pain; He draws near to the brokenhearted. As the psalmist writes, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18, NIV). You might spend a moment recognizing that Jesus knows what suffering is like—He has walked through darkness Himself. He is gentle, He is present, and He does not ask you to pretend things are okay before you come to Him. Talk to Jesus about what it means to you that He sees you right now, in this difficulty. What does His presence mean to you tonight?
Confession
This is a safe place to be honest about the ways this difficulty has affected your heart. You might feel anger, despair, doubt, or even shame. None of these feelings disqualify you from Jesus's love. The apostle Paul reminds us, "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience" (Colossians 3:12, NIV)—and that compassion and gentleness Jesus extends first to you. If you've struggled to trust, grown bitter, or pushed away from others in your pain, you can name that here without fear. Jesus doesn't condemn; He understands the human heart in its breaking. Take a moment to tell Him honestly what's happening inside you.
Thanksgiving
Even in difficulty, there are small mercies worth naming. They might feel tiny—a moment of rest, someone's kindness, a breath of hope, the fact that this day is ending and a new one will come. Jesus teaches us to give thanks in all circumstances, not because hardship is good, but because gratitude anchors us to God's faithfulness even when we can't see the whole picture. As Paul writes, "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NIV). What small thing—even one—can you thank Jesus for tonight? It might be as simple as being alive, being seen, or having made it through another day.
My Concerns
Now bring your need directly to Jesus. You don't need fancy words; just honesty. Ask Him for what you truly need right now—it might be strength for tomorrow, relief from this pain, wisdom about what comes next, comfort for your heart, or simply the ability to sleep. Jesus said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, NIV). He invites your asking. Tell Him what would help, what you're afraid of, what you're hoping for. And as you bring your requests, you might also ask Him to help you trust Him—not because you have to, but because in trusting, you find a place to lay down your burden, at least for tonight.
