Peace in the Deep: A Prayer for Anxiety
A contemplative ACTS prayer guide designed for late-night or early-morning seasons when anxiety weighs heavily. This guide invites you to bring your restless thoughts to God's throne, finding supernatural peace through worship, honest confession, grateful remembrance, and specific intercession.

Adoration
Begin by turning your attention to who God is in the midst of your anxiety. Meditate on the character of the Lord who never sleeps and never slumbers, as the psalmist reminds us: "He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber" (Psalm 121:3-4). Speak aloud or whisper words of wonder at His constant vigilance and tender care. Acknowledge that even in this dark hour, God's love is steadfast and His power is limitless. You might say something like: "Lord, You are faithful when my mind races with worry. You are the God who holds all things together, and nothing catches You by surprise." Praise Him for being Emmanuel—God with us—present in every anxious moment.
Confession
In the stillness, gently examine where anxiety has led you away from trust. Confess the moments you've tried to control outcomes through worry rather than surrendering to God's sovereignty. As Scripture says, "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7), acknowledging that anxiety often signals a refusal to fully release our burden to Him. You might pray: "Father, I confess that I have held tight to my fears instead of letting them go. I've worried as though my anxiety could change tomorrow, when only You can. Forgive me for doubting Your goodness." Be honest about any bitterness, anger, or resentment that accompanies your sleepless state. Receive the freedom that comes through genuine confession: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
Thanksgiving
Even in anxiety, cultivate gratitude for God's specific mercies in your life. Thank Him for the way He has been faithful in past seasons of fear—recall times when His peace did come, when worries proved unfounded, or when He sustained you through difficulty. Give thanks for the gift of this quiet moment itself, this opportunity to meet with Him undistracted. Speak appreciation for His Word, which brings comfort: "Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord... I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands" (Psalm 119:1-2). Thank Him for those who have prayed for you, for the shelter of your home, for breath in your lungs. Even as your mind churns, practice finding three specific gifts to name before God, anchoring yourself in tangible evidence of His provision.
My Concerns
Now bring your specific anxieties before the Father with honest, direct requests. Name the particular worries that surface in this deep hour—whether about health, relationships, finances, or unknown futures. Pray with the confidence that Jesus gives us: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7). Ask God to still your racing thoughts, to quiet your nervous body, and to grant you the gift of sleep or rest. Plead for His Holy Spirit to whisper truth to your soul: that you are secure in Christ, that your worth is not determined by your circumstances, and that His plans are good. Request the fruit of the Spirit—particularly peace and self-control—to govern your emotions. Close this section by asking the Lord to help you trust Him more fully tomorrow.
