Prayer During Difficult Times

A guided ACTS prayer for those facing challenging circumstances, offering comfort through adoration of God's character, honest confession of struggles, gratitude for God's presence, and petitions for strength and guidance.

Anytime Difficult
5–12 min

Welcome to this time of prayer. Whatever difficulty you're facing, know that God invites you to bring it to Him with honesty and hope.

Adoration

Begin by lifting your eyes to the unchanging character of God, even when your circumstances feel unstable. As it is written, "The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?" (Psalm 27:1). Spend a moment acknowledging God's faithfulness throughout history and in your own life. Recognize His sovereignty over all things—His wisdom that surpasses human understanding, His compassion that never fails, and His strength that sustains us in our weakest moments. "Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit" (Psalm 147:5). Let your heart rest in the truth that no difficulty is beyond His care or outside His ability to work through.

Confession

Now bring your authentic self before God. Confess the fears, doubts, and frustrations that have risen in your heart during this difficult season. It is safe to be honest here—God already knows your struggles and invites you to name them. As Scripture assures us, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Perhaps you've questioned God's goodness, grown discouraged, or acted in ways you regret out of stress or pain. Lay these before Him without shame. Confess also any ways you've relied on your own strength rather than seeking His help, or moments you've failed to trust His promises during this trial.

Thanksgiving

Even amid difficulty, God invites you to find reasons for gratitude. Thank Him for His presence in this very moment—that He has not abandoned you despite the pain. "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Express gratitude for the support of others, for lessons learned through hardship, and for the ways trials have deepened your faith or revealed God's character anew. Thank Him for hope itself—the promise that this difficult season is not permanent and that He is working all things together for good. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him" (Romans 8:28). Appreciate too the mercy that sustains you daily and the grace that meets you exactly where you are.

My Concerns

Finally, bring your specific needs before God with courage and confidence. Ask Him for wisdom to navigate the decisions before you: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault" (James 1:5). Petition for strength to endure, peace that guards your heart and mind, and clarity about next steps. Ask the Holy Spirit to comfort you in your grief or anxiety, and request healing—whether physical, emotional, relational, or spiritual. Pray for those around you who are affected by this difficulty, and ask God to open doors and create pathways forward that you cannot yet see. "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). Finally, ask for faith to trust Him even when the way forward remains unclear, and for patience as His work unfolds in His perfect timing.
