Adoration
Begin by turning your attention to who God is, even in the midst of your pain. Though circumstances feel overwhelming, God's character remains unchanging and true. As the psalmist declares, "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?" (Psalm 27:1). Spend time recognizing His faithfulness through past struggles, His infinite wisdom that sees what we cannot see, and His tender compassion for the broken-hearted. Jesus Himself knew deep suffering, and in Matthew 11:28, He invites us with these words: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Adore the God who draws near to the suffering, who is never distant from our pain, and who weaves all things—even our darkest days—toward His redemptive purposes.
Confession
Honest confession clears the way for God's healing work in our hearts. In times of difficulty, we often harbor unspoken frustrations, doubts about God's goodness, or shame about how we've responded to our circumstances. The apostle John reminds us that "if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Bring before God any anger, fear, bitterness, or despair you've felt. Confess moments when you've lashed out at others or turned away from Him in your pain. Confess the places where you've relied on your own strength instead of His. Remember that confession isn't about earning God's favor—it's about removing the barriers between you and His healing grace, so that like David in Psalm 42:11, you can learn to hope again in God.
Thanksgiving
Even in difficulty, gratitude opens our eyes to God's gifts and presence. Thank God for the specific ways He has sustained you through this trial—perhaps through a faithful friend, a moment of unexpected peace, or the simple fact that you've survived another day. Give thanks for His Word, which provides comfort and truth when our emotions deceive us. Acknowledge with gratitude that Romans 8:28 promises: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Thank Him for the growth and strength you're developing through this difficulty, for the deeper dependence on Him you're learning, and for His promise that He will complete the good work He's begun in you (Philippians 1:6). Gratitude doesn't deny your pain; rather, it anchors your soul in the reality of God's simultaneous work beneath the surface of your struggles.
My Concerns
Now bring your deepest needs and longings before God with honesty and faith. Ask Him for the specific relief, wisdom, healing, or provision you need most in this season. As Jesus taught us in Matthew 7:7, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." Pray for supernatural strength to face each day, for clarity when you're confused about what to do, and for people who can support you with practical help and spiritual encouragement. Ask God to protect your heart from bitterness and despair, to soften any hardened places, and to help you see His hand even in unexpected places. Request the peace that Paul describes in Philippians 4:6-7, which "transcends all understanding" and will "guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Finally, surrender your timeline and your preferred outcomes to Him, praying that His will—not yours—be done, just as Jesus modeled in His own darkest hour (Matthew 26:39).
