Seeking Guidance in the Evening
A prayer guide for the evening hours when you're facing a decision or seeking direction. This guide creates space to lay your questions before Jesus and listen for His wisdom as the day winds down.

Guidance

Adoration
Begin by centering yourself on who Jesus is—the one whose wisdom never fails, whose sight is clear even in our fog. You might pray something like: Jesus, you see the whole landscape of my life in a way I never can. You're not confused by my crossroads; you're already there waiting. As it says in Proverbs, "The LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding" (Proverbs 2:6, ESV). Spend a moment recognizing that the guidance you're seeking doesn't come from your own striving—it comes from a God who loves to be asked, who delights when His children turn to Him with honest questions. Let yourself rest in the truth that seeking His guidance is exactly what honors Him.
Confession
Now gently bring your hesitations into the light. Are there places where you've been trying to figure things out on your own instead of waiting for His voice? Have you let fear or impatience push you toward answers before you were truly ready to listen? You don't need to rehearse every misstep—just be honest. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, ESV). Jesus isn't waiting for you to have your act together before you ask for His help. Tell Him where you've been running ahead, holding back, or doubting His willingness to guide. There's freedom in naming it.
Thanksgiving
Even in the uncertainty, there is ground to stand on. Thank Jesus for guidance He's already given you—moments when His direction was clear, times He's proven faithful, the wisdom of people He's placed in your life. You might say: Thank you that I don't have to see the whole path to trust the next step. Thank you for caring about the details of my life more than I do. As the psalmist reminds us, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you" (Psalm 32:8, ESV). Linger here—recall one time recently when He came through. Let gratitude soften the anxiety that often surrounds big decisions.
My Concerns
Now lay your specific need before Him. Name the decision, the question, the crossroads clearly. Not because He doesn't already know, but because the act of naming it to Him centers your heart on Him rather than on your own churning thoughts. You might pray: Here's where I'm stuck, Jesus. I need to understand which way honors you and leads toward life. Show me what I'm missing. Help me recognize your voice beneath the noise of my own fear and wishes. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths" (Proverbs 3:5–6, ESV). Rather than demanding an answer tonight, you might ask Him to sharpen your discernment—to remove what obscures His leading, to quiet what's drowning out His voice. Ask Him to lead you not just to a right decision, but deeper into trust of Him as you walk.
