Seeking Guidance This Morning
A prayer guide to help you bring your questions and decisions to Jesus at the start of your day, asking for wisdom and direction as you move forward.
Morning
Need direction
5–12 min
Adoration
Begin by turning your attention to who Jesus is — not as a problem-solver yet, but as the one who sees the whole path ahead. You might pray something like: Jesus, you are the Good Shepherd who leads me beside still waters. You see around every corner, and nothing surprises you. In this moment of not knowing which way to turn, I want to worship you first — not for what you'll do, but for who you are. As David writes, "The Lord will guide me along the best pathway for my life" (Psalm 48:14, NLT). Before I ask for direction, I'm thankful that you already know the way. Take a breath here. Sit with the reality that the God who knows the future is present with you right now, in this morning hour, already working for your good.
Confession
Now, gently bring your heart's resistance into the light. Are you afraid to follow where Jesus might lead? Are you holding tightly to what you think should happen, rather than opening your hands to what he knows is best? You might say to Jesus: I confess that sometimes I want your guidance only if it matches my plan. I hold back parts of my life, worried you'll ask me to surrender something I'm not ready to lose. Forgive me for the times I've ignored your whispers because they were inconvenient. As it says in Proverbs, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5, NIV) — and I haven't always done that. Be honest here. There's no judgment in Jesus' presence, only the kind of mercy that sets you free to move forward.
Thanksgiving
Before you ask for what comes next, pause to notice what Jesus has already done. Where has he guided you faithfully in the past? What doors has he opened, what dangers has he spared you from, what dreams has he honored? You might pray: Thank you, Jesus, that you have never abandoned me. Even when I've made mistakes, you've woven them into my story for good. I'm grateful for the times you've made the right path clear — sometimes through a person, sometimes through a closed door, sometimes through a still, small voice I almost missed. As Paul reminds us, "I am confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion" (Philippians 1:6, NIV). Take a moment to name one or two ways Jesus has guided you recently, even in small things. Let gratitude settle into your chest as you move forward.
My Concerns
Now bring your specific need before Jesus. You don't need the perfect words — just honesty. What decision weighs on you? What fork in the road are you standing at? You might say: Jesus, I need wisdom about [name the situation]. I don't see clearly. Show me what matters most. I'm willing to follow where you lead, even if it's not what I expected. Help me recognize your voice — through your Word, through wise counsel, through the circumstances you arrange. Give me courage to say yes to you, even when it's hard. As Jesus himself said, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:27, NIV). Don't rush this part. Sit with the silence. Listen for a stirring, a sense of peace about a next step, or simply the assurance that you're not walking this path alone. Sometimes the answer comes immediately. Sometimes Jesus asks you to wait, and that waiting is itself guidance.
