Adoration
Start by turning your attention to who Jesus is—not primarily as your guide (though he is), but as the one worthy of your trust. You might pray about his character: his wisdom that sees what you cannot yet see, his faithfulness in past decisions, the way he has never once led you astray. As Proverbs reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5, ESV). Let that settle in. Jesus is not scrambling to figure out your path—he already knows it. He invites you into that knowledge. Spend a moment recognizing his steadiness, his eternal perspective, the way he cares about the details of your life. You might tell him: "You are wise. You are trustworthy. You see what I cannot."
Confession
Now bring your hesitations and fears to him honestly. Maybe you're afraid of making the wrong choice. Maybe you don't trust your own judgment. Maybe you've rushed ahead before without waiting to hear from him, and that's weighing on you. There's no shame in naming these things—Jesus already knows them, and he wants you to speak them aloud. As it says in 1 Peter, "Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7, ESV). You don't have to carry the weight of getting this right by yourself. Tell Jesus what you're struggling with: the doubt, the urgency you feel, the places where you don't trust yourself or him. He listens without judgment and meets you exactly where you are.
Thanksgiving
Even in uncertainty, there is gratitude to offer. Thank Jesus for the fact that you don't have to figure this out alone. Thank him for times he has guided you before—moments when you felt his direction, when doors opened or closed at just the right moment, when his wisdom proved true. You might recall specific times he has shown up, and let that strengthen your confidence in him now. As Philippians tells us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6, ESV). Gratitude shifts something in us—it reminds us that we're not starting from zero. Jesus has been faithful. He will be faithful now. Name a few things you're grateful for, even the small ones.
My Concerns
Now speak your request clearly and directly. What guidance do you need? Is it about a decision you're facing, a direction for your work, a relationship, a season of life? Tell Jesus specifically what you're asking him to show you. You might pray: "Help me to know what you want for me in this situation. Give me wisdom. Make your direction clear." And then—this is important—ask him for the grace to wait and listen. As James writes, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5, ESV). You've asked. Now sit with that. You might spend the remaining time in quiet, listening for any stirring of his Spirit, any word or impression that rises up. He may speak through Scripture, through a still small voice, through circumstances, or through the counsel of trusted people. Stay open. Tell him you're ready to follow wherever he leads.
