Adoration
Start by turning your attention to who Jesus is—not what He can do for you, but who He truly is. In the deep stillness of night, let your mind rest on His character. He is the one who knows every corner of the future you cannot see. He is patient with your confusion. As John writes, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1, ESV)—Jesus holds all wisdom and all knowledge. Take a moment to simply acknowledge His presence here with you. You might whisper, "Jesus, You are wise. You see what I cannot see. You are here." Let that truth settle over you like the quiet of these late hours. There is no rush to understand everything right now. What matters is that you're here, and He is here.
Confession
Now bring your honest self before Him. Confession in this moment isn't primarily about sin—though if guilt or shame is tangled up in your uncertainty, name it. More often, confession here means admitting the ways you've been trying to carry this alone: the sleepless thinking, the replaying of conversations, the fear that you'll make the wrong choice. Tell Jesus the truth about your exhaustion. He already knows it. As the psalmist says, "You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar" (Psalm 139:2, ESV). There's freedom in speaking it aloud rather than spinning it silently. You might pray, "I confess I've been anxious. I confess I've wanted to control this outcome. I'm tired of carrying this weight alone." Jesus doesn't shame you for these feelings—He meets you in them.
Thanksgiving
Even in uncertainty, there are things to thank Him for. Thank Him for caring enough about your life to be present in this moment. Thank Him for past guidance He has given—times when the path became clear, times when He proved faithful. Thank Him that you don't have to have it all figured out tonight. As Paul reminds us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6, ESV). Gratitude doesn't mean you're not still confused; it means you're remembering that Jesus is trustworthy even when the way forward isn't yet visible. You might say, "Thank you that You've guided me before. Thank you that I'm not the one carrying this alone. Thank you for giving me this quiet time to lay it down before You." Let thanksgiving settle your racing mind.
My Concerns
Now bring your request before Him—the actual question you're wrestling with, the decision you're facing, the direction you're seeking. Don't soften it or make it sound more polished than it is. "Should I...", "Help me understand...", "Show me...". Jesus wants your real longing, not a rehearsed version. As He teaches through James, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5, ESV). Lay out what you're trying to discern. Then pause. Ask Him to give you peace about the next small step—not necessarily the whole answer tonight, but what He's inviting you toward in the coming days. You might pray, "Jesus, I don't know which way to go. I'm asking You to show me the next step. Give me wisdom. Give me peace. And help me trust You even before I can see the full path." Then sit with the quiet. Sometimes His guidance comes in a sudden clarity; sometimes it comes as a slow settling of peace. Sometimes it comes as a whisper the next morning. Trust that He is at work.
