Evening Guidance — Finding Clarity in the Quiet
An evening prayer to bring your uncertainties before Jesus and listen for his direction. This guide helps you lay down the day's questions and open yourself to the quiet wisdom that comes when you still your heart and ask for guidance.

Adoration
Begin by turning your attention to who Jesus is — not as someone distant, but as the one who knows every turn ahead of you. You might speak to him about his character: his wisdom that sees what you cannot, his faithfulness through seasons of uncertainty, his patient willingness to guide those who ask. The Psalmist knew this intimacy when he wrote, "You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory" (Psalm 73:24, ESV). Jesus is not reluctant to guide; he delights in it. Take a moment to simply tell him: *I trust that you see what I cannot. I'm here to listen.*
Confession
Now bring your honest self into this prayer. Where have you been moving without checking in with him? Have you been anxious about the decision, taking steps from fear rather than faith? Have you been stubborn about your own preferences, not truly open to what he might be asking? Jesus already knows these things — he invites you to name them anyway, not because he's keeping score, but because confession opens your hands to receive his direction. As Paul wrote, "Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7, ESV). You don't have to pretend certainty you don't feel. Tell him what's true: *I confess that I've been trying to figure this out on my own. I'm afraid. I'm confused. Help me let go and listen.*
Thanksgiving
Even in uncertainty, there is ground for gratitude. Thank Jesus for past times he has guided you — moments when you look back and see his hand. Thank him for the very fact that this decision matters to you, that you care about getting it right. Thank him for wisdom available to you in Scripture, in counsel from others, in the quiet voice of his Spirit. The book of James tells us, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5, NIV). He is generous. He is not withholding from you. Take time to say: *Thank you for always proving faithful. Thank you for inviting me to seek your wisdom. Thank you for caring about this path I'm on.*
My Concerns
Now ask. Lay your specific question before Jesus with honesty and openness. Don't rehearse what you think the answer should be; instead, ask him to clarify what he sees and what he's calling you toward. Ask for patience as clarity comes — sometimes guidance unfolds slowly. Ask for peace about the waiting itself. Ask for discernment to distinguish between your own desires and his leading. Jesus promised, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you" (Matthew 7:7, NIV). He means this. You might pray: *Show me the next right step. Give me clarity about... [name your specific situation]. Give me peace that you are leading me, even if I don't yet see the full path. Help me trust you more than I trust my own understanding.* Sit with him in the silence after you ask, making space for him to speak to your heart through his Spirit, through Scripture, or through the gradual settling of peace.
