Evening Prayer: A Quiet Moment to Rest in Jesus

As evening settles in, take a few moments to lay down the day and meet with Jesus. This guide walks you through adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication—a gentle way to transition from doing into simply being with him.

Evening Everyday life
5–12 min

Welcome. This evening, there's no rush—just you and Jesus, sitting together as the day winds down.

Adoration

Start by noticing who Jesus is. You might begin by thinking about his character—his faithfulness, his gentleness, his unwavering presence. The psalmist reminds us, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands" (Psalm 19:1, ESV). Even as evening falls and light fades, his work remains. You might pray: What about Jesus feels most real to you right now? His patience? His love? His strength? Take a moment to tell him what draws your heart toward him tonight.

Confession

Now, gently bring the weight of the day before him. You don't need to rehearse everything—just what's pressing on your heart. Jesus said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, ESV). He invites you here, not to condemn you, but to lighten your load. If there are words left unspoken, moments where you stumbled, or places where you turned away from him, bring them now. Speak them simply. He already knows, and he's waiting to meet you with grace, not judgment.

Thanksgiving

Even on ordinary evenings, there is much to be grateful for. "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 5:18, ESV). You might reflect: What small thing happened today that you're glad for? A meal. A conversation. A moment of rest. The breath in your lungs. The roof over your head. Jesus sees every kindness he's woven into your day. Talk to him about what you're grateful for—the big things and the small ones. Gratitude, even whispered quietly, opens your heart to see how near he truly is.

My Concerns

Close by bringing your needs and the needs of those you love to Jesus. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6, ESV). You might talk with him about tomorrow, about a burden you're carrying, about someone you're worried for. Lay it down here. Jesus invites you to ask, to seek, to knock. Speak what's on your heart—your hopes, your questions, your needs. Then rest in knowing he hears you.
