Evening Prayer: Closing the Day with Jesus
A gentle guide to bring your day to Jesus as evening settles. Reflect on what he's done, name what weighs on you, give thanks for his faithfulness, and rest in his care for tomorrow.

Adoration
Begin by simply noticing who Jesus is. You might start by remembering something you saw today—a moment of kindness, a glimpse of beauty, the way someone made you laugh. These small things point to his character. Tell him what you admire about him. You might say, "Jesus, I see your patience in how you've guided me today" or "I'm grateful for your steadiness." As the Psalmist says, "One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord" (Psalm 27:4, NIV). You don't need eloquent words—just honest ones. What aspect of Jesus' nature stands out to you this evening?
Confession
Now bring the harder parts of your day to him. Where did you fall short? Where did you act without love, speak without kindness, or turn away from what you knew was right? Jesus already knows, and he's not waiting to condemn you. He's waiting to restore you. As John writes, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, NIV). Take a moment to name what's true. It might be anger you held onto, a word you regret, a choice you made in fear. Tell Jesus about it simply. You might say, "I was unkind today, and I'm sorry." Or "I didn't trust you, and I acted from worry instead." He listens to this confession not as a judge, but as someone who loves you completely.
Thanksgiving
Move into gratitude—for the specific and the ordinary. Thank Jesus for the people who stood by you today, the meals you ate, the work you completed, the breath in your lungs. Thanksgiving is powerful because it reminds you that you're not forgotten; you're held. The Apostle Paul encourages us: "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, NIV). Even in difficult days, there are small mercies. Did someone listen to you? Did you rest at some point? Did you make it through a hard moment? Name these. You might pray, "Thank you for [specific person or moment]. Thank you that even when I couldn't see your hand, you were working." Let gratitude settle your heart.
My Concerns
Finally, bring your needs and hopes to Jesus. What are you carrying into tomorrow? Where do you need his strength, his wisdom, his peace? Don't shy away from asking directly. Jesus invites this: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6–7, NIV). You might ask for rest tonight, for clarity on a decision, for healing in a relationship, for courage for what lies ahead. Ask for what matters to you. And as you ask, remember that even if the answer isn't what you expect, Jesus is trustworthy. You can rest tonight knowing he's already awake, already caring for you.
