Evening Prayer in the Midst of Difficulty
A gentle prayer guide for evening, when the weight of a difficult day or situation settles in. This guide helps you bring your honest struggle to Jesus and find rest in his presence.

Going through something hard

Adoration
Begin by turning your attention to who Jesus is, even in this hard time. You don't have to feel better first to worship him — you can come exactly as you are. Think about his steadiness: he is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, unmoved by your circumstances. You might pray something like: "Jesus, you are faithful when I am shaking. You are present when I feel lost." As the psalmist discovered, even in darkness, "The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?" (Psalm 27:1, ESV). Let yourself rest in the truth that his character doesn't change with your pain. What aspect of Jesus' nature do you need to hold onto tonight?
Confession
This is a safe place to name what's true. Difficulty often stirs up feelings — maybe frustration, doubt, numbness, or even anger toward God. You don't need to clean those up before bringing them to him. Jesus already knows. You might acknowledge: "I'm angry that this is happening," or "I've been pushing away from you because I'm scared," or simply "I'm exhausted and I don't know how to trust right now." Remember that confession isn't about shame — it's about honesty. As Paul wrote, "Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7, ESV). Your feelings matter to Jesus. What do you need to tell him about where you really are?
Thanksgiving
In difficulty, gratitude might feel small or impossible — and that's okay. You're not looking for toxic positivity here. But look for the tender things: perhaps a person who showed up, a moment of unexpected kindness, the fact that you made it through another day. You might thank Jesus for "the friend who listened," or "the way you sustained me when I wanted to give up," or even "the fact that morning will come." As Jesus taught, we can give thanks in the midst of hard things because we trust him, not because the hard things are good. "Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks" (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, ESV) — not because everything is fine, but because you belong to One who is. What small mercy or grace did you notice today, even amid the struggle?
My Concerns
Now bring your need directly to Jesus. Don't hedge or soften it. If you need relief, ask. If you need wisdom about what comes next, ask. If you need to feel his presence or to sleep peacefully tonight, ask. If you need strength you don't have or hope you can't manufacture, ask. Jesus said, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find" (Matthew 7:7, ESV). He is not exhausted by your asking or frustrated by your need. You might pray: "Give me peace tonight. Show me the next step. Help me to trust you. Carry what I cannot carry." Bring your whole heart — the desperate parts, the uncertain parts, the parts that need him most. What is the deepest thing you need from Jesus right now?
