Evening Prayer in the Midst of Difficulty
A gentle prayer guide for evening, when the weight of a difficult day or season feels especially heavy. This guide creates space to be honest with Jesus about your struggle, to remember His presence, and to rest in His care through the night.

Going through something hard

Adoration
Begin by noticing something true about Jesus, even in this difficult season. He is not distant from your pain—He is close. You might pray: "Jesus, even though tonight feels hard, I know You are faithful. You do not abandon those who are suffering." As it says in Hebrews, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8, ESV). His character does not change when circumstances do. Take a moment to acknowledge one thing you know about Him—His steadiness, His love, His willingness to listen. You might say it simply: "You are good, even now." Let that truth settle in for a breath or two. There is no pressure to feel better; just let yourself know that He is present.
Confession
This is a safe place to be honest about what the difficulty has stirred up in you. You might feel anger, doubt, exhaustion, or even disappointment with God Himself—and He can handle that. Talk to Jesus about it. "I'm frustrated," or "I'm tired of waiting," or "I don't understand why this is happening" are all things He already knows and welcomes you to say aloud. The psalmist did this too: "My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word" (Psalm 119:28, ESV). Confession is not about shame; it is about honesty. If there are ways this difficulty has led you away from trust or toward actions you regret, bring those too. Jesus already knows, and He is waiting to remind you that you are forgiven.
Thanksgiving
Even in difficulty, there are small mercies to notice. You might be grateful for a moment of rest, a person who listened, or simply the fact that this night will end and tomorrow will come. Thank Jesus for His faithfulness that continues even when life is hard. You might pray: "Thank you for seeing me. Thank you for not leaving me alone in this." There is a promise that holds true even now: "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:18, ESV). Thanksgiving does not mean pretending the difficulty isn't real—it means choosing to see Jesus's faithfulness alongside it. What is one thing, however small, that you can thank Him for tonight?
My Concerns
Now bring your needs directly to Jesus. He wants to hear them. "I need strength for tomorrow," or "Help me sleep," or "Show me what to do next" are prayers He listens to with full attention. Lay out what you are carrying: the worry, the pain, the uncertainty. You do not need fancy words—just honesty. Remember: "Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7, ESV). That invitation is for you, right now, in this difficult season. Ask Him for what you need most tonight—whether that is peace, clarity, comfort, healing, or simply the grace to face tomorrow. And ask Him to help you trust Him, even when you cannot see the whole path ahead. Close by simply saying: "I am yours, and I trust you with this."
