Evening Prayer in the Midst of Difficulty
A gentle guide to bring your weariness and heartache to Jesus as the day closes. This prayer invites you to lay down what is heavy, receive His steadiness, and find rest in His presence even when circumstances feel hard.

Adoration
Begin by turning your attention toward Jesus—not toward the weight you're carrying, but toward Him. You might start simply: "Jesus, even in this hard time, I know you are here." Let yourself rest in who He is, separate from what you're struggling with. As the writer of Hebrews reminds us, Jesus is "the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8, ESV)—His character doesn't shift when our circumstances do. Sit with that for a moment. What is one thing about Jesus that feels true to you right now, even in the difficulty? It might be that He is faithful, that He sees you, that He is gentle. Tell Him what you notice about who He is.
Confession
Gently bring to Jesus what has risen in you during this difficult time. You might find anger, fear, doubt, or despair—all of these are safe to name before Him. You don't need to perform strength you don't feel. The psalmist cried out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Psalm 22:1, ESV), and those words are in Scripture for a reason—because honest pain is welcome before Jesus. You might also confess where you've turned away from His presence today: places where you've numbed yourself, isolated, or grasped at control. Speak these without shame. There is no judgment waiting for you here, only the One who knows your heart already and loves you still.
Thanksgiving
Even in difficulty, there are small mercies and steadinesses that hold you. You might give thanks for breath, for someone who checked on you, for a moment of quiet, for the fact that this day is ending and a new one will come. You might thank Jesus for the cross—for the fact that He has walked through suffering Himself and meets you in yours. Paul writes, "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice" (Philippians 4:4, ESV), and in difficult seasons, rejoicing sometimes looks like naming one small thing that has held. What is present with you, even now, that you can acknowledge with gratitude?
My Concerns
Now bring your specific need before Jesus. You don't need eloquent words—simple honesty works. "I need help." "I need peace." "I need to know you're here." "I need this to change." Jesus invites us to ask: "Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7, ESV). Tell Him what you need from Him in this difficulty. Ask for what your heart longs for: courage, clarity, relief, comfort, strength for tomorrow, or simply the ability to rest tonight. You might also ask Him to show you how to take one small step forward, or simply to help you sleep. Lay it down, and let yourself receive His attentiveness to what matters to you.
