Evening Prayer in the Midst of Difficulty

A gentle prayer guide to help you bring your struggles to Jesus as the day closes. This guide creates space to be honest about what's hard, to remember God's steadiness, and to rest in His presence tonight.

Evening Going through something hard
5–12 min

You've carried something heavy today. This is a safe place to set it down before Jesus and let Him sit with you through the evening ahead.

Adoration

Begin by noticing who Jesus is, even in this difficult moment. You might start simply: Jesus, you are here. You are faithful. Even when my day has been hard, you haven't left. Take a moment to name something true about Him—His presence, His compassion, His power. The psalmist knew this kind of honest trust: "My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him" (Psalm 62:1, NIV). You don't need grand words. Just turn your weary heart toward Him and acknowledge that He is good, that He sees what you're facing, and that His character doesn't change because your circumstances are difficult.

Confession

Now invite Jesus to help you be honest about where you are. This isn't about shame—it's about truth-telling in the safety of His presence. You might pray about anger you've felt, words you've spoken in frustration, ways you've pulled away from Him or others today, or doubts that have crept in. As John writes, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, NIV). There's no confession too tangled for Jesus. Bring what's weighing on your conscience, and let yourself feel the relief of speaking it aloud to someone who loves you completely.

Thanksgiving

Even in difficulty, there are small mercies. Pause and look for them. Maybe it's a person who showed you kindness, a moment of rest, something that made you smile despite the heaviness, or simply that you made it through the day. You might thank Jesus for His patience with you, for the promise that morning will come, or for the way He meets you right here in the dark. Paul encourages us: "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4, NIV)—not because everything is easy, but because He is faithful. Name three small things, or one large thing, and let gratitude begin to steady your heart.

My Concerns

Tell Jesus what you need. Ask Him to carry what you cannot carry alone. You might ask for rest tonight, for wisdom about what tomorrow holds, for strength you don't feel you have, for the presence of His peace, or for healing and change in the situation pressing on you. Jesus invites you: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, NIV). Don't ask timidly or strategically—bring your real needs, your desperate hopes, your questions. Ask Him to help you sleep, to help you wake with new strength, to guard your heart through the night. This is what He's here for.
