Adoration
Begin by noticing what draws you to God right now. You might think of something you witnessed today—a kindness, a beautiful moment, the way someone made you laugh—and thank Jesus for showing up in that moment. Even small things count. As the writer of Proverbs reflects, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above" (James 1:17, ESV). Spend a few moments naming qualities of Jesus that strike you: his faithfulness, his nearness, his patience. You don't need many words—sometimes a single word spoken slowly, like "faithful" or "kind," is enough. Let your heart settle into gratitude for who he is.
Confession
Now gently turn to anything that's created distance between you and God today. This might be something you did, words you spoke in frustration, or a way you turned from him. It might also be something you're carrying—worry, doubt, anger—that's worn on your spirit. Jesus doesn't ask you to perform perfect confession; he invites honest ones. As he tells us through John, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, ESV). Name what comes to mind without shame. Jesus already knows, and he's already making room for your confession. Speak it simply, and rest in the truth that you are forgiven.
Thanksgiving
Let your mind move over the day and pick out moments of provision, small mercies, or simply the fact that you're here, alive, able to pray. Maybe it's a meal, a conversation, a problem that worked out, or someone who checked on you. Maybe it's just that you made it through. The psalmist writes, "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name" (Psalm 100:4, ESV). You might thank Jesus for rest itself—for the gift of sleep that's coming, for a bed, for safety. Thank him for his presence throughout your day, even in moments when you didn't feel it. Gratitude doesn't require a long list; it requires noticing and naming what's already been given.
My Concerns
Finally, bring before Jesus what you need. This might be rest for your body and mind tonight, clarity about something that's been unclear, help with tomorrow, healing for someone you love, or simply peace. You might pray for wisdom, patience, or the courage to take a step you've been hesitant about. Jesus invites you with these words: "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you" (Matthew 7:7, ESV). Bring your requests without editing them—Jesus can handle both the big prayers and the small ones. Ask for what you truly need, and then release it to him, trusting that he hears and cares.
