Evening Prayer: Settling Your Heart Before Rest

A gentle prayer guide for evening to help you lay down the day and draw closer to Jesus. You'll move through adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication as you prepare for rest.

Evening Everyday life
5–12 min

Welcome. As the day settles and the evening grows quiet, let's spend a few moments drawing close to Jesus. He's waiting to meet you here.

Adoration

Begin by settling into the quiet of the evening. Let your mind turn to Jesus—not for what he can do, but for who he is. Notice what draws you: his faithfulness that held you through this day, his patience with you, his constant presence even in moments you forgot he was there. You might pray something like, "Jesus, you are good, and your mercy endures. Tonight I see your hand in small things—a conversation that mattered, a burden you helped me carry, a rest you offered when I was weary." As the psalmist knew, "I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago" (Psalm 77:11, ESV). Take a moment to speak aloud or silently name one thing about Jesus that your heart wants to honor right now—his gentleness, his strength, his love for you.

Confession

The evening is a natural time to lay things down—including the weight of how you've fallen short today. There's no need to rehearse everything; Jesus already knows. Instead, invite him into the places where you stumbled, where you chose poorly, where you hurt yourself or others. You might say, "Jesus, I didn't show up the way I wanted to. I was impatient, or unkind, or I turned away when I should have turned toward you." Remember that you come to him as you are. As John reminds us, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, ESV). The confession isn't about earning his forgiveness—it's about receiving it. Sit with that for a moment. What does it feel like to know you're already forgiven?

Thanksgiving

Before you rest, let gratitude settle into your bones. This day held both hard things and good things, and Jesus walked through it with you. Thank him for the small mercies you might otherwise miss: food, shelter, breath, a moment of peace, someone who listened, a task completed, even the lessons hidden in difficulty. You might pray, "Thank you for this day, Jesus. Thank you for people in my life, for your provision, for the way you held me when I didn't even realize I needed holding." As Paul writes, "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, ESV). Let your gratitude be honest and simple. What three things come to mind when you think of his goodness today?

My Concerns

Now bring to Jesus what your heart carries into the night. What are you concerned about? What do you hope for? What relationships, decisions, or worries weigh on you? This is the time to lay it all down before him. You might pray, "Jesus, I'm carrying concern about... I'm hoping for... I need your help with..." Remember that he invites this. As he says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, ESV). Bring your requests without anxiety, knowing he hears you. You might also ask him for a restful night, for peace as you sleep, or for wisdom about something waiting for you tomorrow. What do you most need to place in his hands right now?
