Adoration
Begin by noticing what draws your attention to Jesus right now. Maybe it's something He did for you today—a kindness, a moment of protection, a small joy you didn't expect. Or maybe you simply want to remember who He is: faithful, constant, present even in ordinary moments. You might pray something like, "Jesus, You have been with me all through this day. I see Your steadiness, Your care, Your peace that doesn't depend on how the hours went." Don't rush this. Let your heart settle on one true thing about Him. As the prophet Isaiah wrote, "The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary" (Isaiah 40:28, NIV). He doesn't fade when the sun does. His attention toward you doesn't diminish with the daylight.
Confession
As you move into the evening quiet, it can help to gently ask: Where did I miss the mark today? Not to punish yourself, but to come clean. Maybe you spoke unkindly, or let worry take up space where trust could have grown. Maybe you moved through the day without turning toward Him, assuming you could manage alone. Bring these things to Jesus without shame. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, ESV). Confession isn't about earning His forgiveness—it's about stepping back into the truth that He's already offered it. You might simply say, "I'm bringing this to You, Jesus. I want to lay it down tonight." Then pause. Feel the weight lift.
Thanksgiving
Now let your eyes rest on what you've been given. Not just the large things, though those matter—but the small ones too. A meal, a conversation, a moment when you felt steadied, a person who made you laugh, a task you managed to complete. Even on harder days, there are threads of grace woven through. You might pray, "Thank You, Jesus, for..." and let that list grow as long as it needs to. The Psalmist invites us into this: "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name" (Psalm 100:4, NIV). Gratitude isn't about denying what was hard; it's about refusing to let the hard eclipse what was also good. What few things come to mind when you think of today with tenderness?
My Concerns
As the day closes, bring Jesus what you need. Not just the big requests, though those matter—but the small ones too. Rest. Clarity about tomorrow. Help with something you're carrying. A softening of your heart toward someone. Healing, whether physical, relational, or spiritual. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6, NIV). He invites your real needs into His presence. You don't have to perform strength in the evening. You might simply say, "I need Your help with..." or "As I rest tonight, would You help me release...?" Tell Him what you actually need. He listens. He cares. He acts.
