Finding Calm in the Middle of the Day
A midday prayer to quiet anxious thoughts and anchor yourself in Jesus's presence. This guide helps you pause, breathe, and remember that you are not alone in what you're feeling.
Midday
Feeling anxious
5–10 min
Adoration
Start by noticing Jesus with you, even in this anxious moment. You don't have to clean up your feelings first or pretend everything is fine. He sees you clearly and loves you anyway. Take a breath and whisper to Him: *You are steady. You are good. You see me.* As it says in Matthew 11:28, 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.' Jesus isn't distant or annoyed by your anxiety — He invites you into rest with Him. Spend a moment naming something you know to be true about Him: His faithfulness, His gentleness, His power, His nearness. Let those truths start to quiet the noise inside.
Confession
There's often shame bundled up with anxiety — a sense that you should be handling this better, that your worry means you don't trust enough, that something is wrong with you. But Jesus doesn't shame you here. Talk to Him about what's underneath your worry. Maybe it's fear you haven't named. Maybe it's a sense that you've lost control. Maybe it's doubt creeping in. Whatever it is, bring it to Him without hiding. As Paul writes, 'Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God' (Philippians 4:6). Notice that he doesn't say *stop being anxious* — he says *pray about it instead*. You're doing that right now. Tell Jesus what you're afraid of. Tell Him what feels too big. He can handle the raw version of what you're feeling.
Thanksgiving
Even in anxiety, there are small mercies to notice. Maybe it's that you have a moment to pause. Maybe it's a breath that came easier than expected. Maybe it's something someone said that helped. Maybe it's simply that you reached for prayer instead of staying stuck. Psalm 34:4 says, 'I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.' You're seeking Him now. Thank Him for one thing — even something small — that reminds you He hasn't left you in this. It might be a person, a memory, a moment of stillness, or just the fact that He's listening to you right now.
My Concerns
Now tell Jesus what you need. Be specific. Do you need calm? Peace that doesn't make sense? Clarity about what comes next? A sign that things will be okay? The ability to take the next small step? Proverbs 3:5-6 holds space for this: 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.' You don't have to see the whole path. Just ask Him to guide the very next thing. Talk to Him about what you need to do in the next hour, the next decision, the next breath. Ask Him to settle your mind. Ask Him to remind you, when the worry comes back, that you've already handed this to Him.
