Finding Clarity in the In-Between
A midday prayer for when you're standing at a crossroads and aren't sure which way to turn. This guide helps you bring your uncertainty to Jesus and listen for his steady direction.
Midday
I don't know what to pray
5–12 min
Adoration
Begin by turning your attention to who Jesus is—not because you have all the answers figured out, but because he does. In the middle of your day, pause and acknowledge that he is constant even when your path isn't clear. Think of a time when you sensed his presence or faithfulness, even in a small way. You might pray something like: "Jesus, you are steady when I am unsure. You see what I cannot see. You know what comes next." As Proverbs reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5, ESV)—not because doubt is wrong, but because his character is trustworthy. Let yourself rest in the fact that uncertainty doesn't shake him.
Confession
There's often a weight we carry when we don't know what to do—a pressure to figure it out on our own, a fear that being unsure means we're failing somehow. Take a moment to be honest about that. Are you frustrated with yourself for not having clarity? Are you worried about making the wrong choice? Are you holding tightly to control because the unknown feels unsafe? Tell Jesus about it. There's no shame in admitting, "I'm scared," or "I wish I knew what to do." He already knows anyway. As Romans tells us, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1, ESV)—your uncertainty doesn't disqualify you. You're not behind or broken because you need to ask for help.
Thanksgiving
Even in this foggy place, there are things to be grateful for. Maybe it's people who've supported you through confusion before. Maybe it's the fact that you're seeking Jesus at all, that some part of you trusts he's worth asking. Maybe it's the freedom itself—that you don't have to have it all figured out today. Thank Jesus for the ground beneath your feet, even if you can't see the path ahead clearly. "Rejoice always; again I will say, rejoice," Paul writes (Philippians 4:4, ESV). That joy isn't about pretending everything is certain; it's about finding moments of peace in the uncertainty itself. What's one small thing you can name right now that you're grateful for?
My Concerns
Now bring your specific uncertainty to Jesus. Don't soften it or make it sound more resolved than it is. Be direct: "I don't know whether to...," or "I'm torn between..." or simply "I need to know what to do." Ask him for clarity—not necessarily an instant answer, but an openness to how he might lead you. Ask for wisdom, for patience with yourself, for signs or guidance you can recognize. Ask him to quiet the noise around you so you can hear his voice. Jesus himself prayed in uncertainty and brought it to his Father (Luke 22:42, ESV)—and in doing so, he showed us it's not only okay to ask, but necessary. You might ask for the next small step forward, even if the whole path isn't visible yet. "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach" (James 1:5, ESV). He's inviting you to ask.
