Jesus, Help Me Through This

A midday prayer for when you're in the thick of something hard. This guide meets you where you are right now—not where you wish you were—and helps you bring your struggle honestly to Jesus.

Midday Going through something hard
5–12 min

You're here in the middle of a hard day, and that matters. Jesus is present in this moment with you.

Adoration

Start by turning your attention to who Jesus is, even in difficulty. You don't have to feel strong or resolved right now—just notice: He is here. He is steady. He is not surprised by what you're facing. You might pray something like: "Jesus, I know you see me right now. You are faithful even when I feel lost. You don't turn away from hard things or from the people in them." Let that settle. The psalmist says, "The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?" (Psalm 27:1, ESV). In this moment, you don't need to see all the way through your difficulty. You just need to know that the one who loves you most is not afraid of it, and not afraid of you.

Confession

Now bring the weight of where you are. Not in shame, but in honesty. Maybe you're angry, or scared, or you said something you regret this morning, or you're running on fumes and doubt. Jesus already knows. He's not waiting for you to clean yourself up first. As it says in Romans, "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8, ESV). You might whisper to him: "I'm struggling, Jesus. I'm afraid. I don't know what to do. I'm tired of carrying this." Or: "I've made this worse, and I need your forgiveness." Let yourself name what's true, right now, without editing it. He can handle it.

Thanksgiving

Even in difficulty, there are small things present. Not to minimize what's hard, but to notice what hasn't been taken: maybe it's that you have someone who believes in you, or that you woke up this morning, or that you reached out for prayer instead of giving up. You might thank Jesus for his patience with you, or for the way he meets you even when you can't feel him. "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4, ESV)—not because your circumstances have changed yet, but because his faithfulness toward you hasn't changed. Take a moment to notice one small thing you're grateful for, even today, and tell Jesus about it.

My Concerns

Bring your request directly to him now. You might ask for relief, or wisdom about what to do next, or simply for strength to take the next hour. You might pray: "Jesus, I need you. Help me know what to do. Give me courage. Help me trust you, even when I can't see where this leads." The apostle Paul reminds us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6, ESV). You don't have to use perfect words. Just tell him what you need. And then, if you can, rest in this: you have asked, and he has heard you.
