Adoration
Start by simply noticing who Jesus is in the middle of your joy. He is the source of every good thing. He delights in your delight. As you begin, you might pray something like: "Jesus, I see You as the giver of all that is good. You turn sorrow into dancing, and You are present in every moment of joy." Take a breath here. Think about what He has shown Himself to be in your life—His faithfulness, His generosity, His kindness. As the Psalmist writes, "You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, that my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent" (Psalm 30:11, ESV). Let that image settle. Your celebration is not separate from Him—it is a conversation with Him. Speak to Him about His character. Tell Him how you see His hand in what you're celebrating.
Confession
In the middle of joy, there's often room for honesty too. You might notice ways you've wanted to take credit where He deserves it, or moments when you've held back from sharing your joy with others, or times when you've celebrated alone instead of bringing Him into it. None of this disqualifies your joy—it simply clears the air between you and Him. As it says in 1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (ESV). You don't need to be perfect to celebrate with Jesus. Just honest. If anything comes to mind—a way you've missed Him in this moment, a hesitation you're carrying—bring it gently to Him now. Ask Him to clear the way so your joy can be whole.
Thanksgiving
This is the heart of your prayer. Let gratitude flow. Thank Him specifically for what you're celebrating—name it, taste it, feel it as you pray. Thank Him for the path that led here, the people involved, the small mercies along the way. Thank Him for His presence even before you recognized this joy was coming. You might pray, "Jesus, thank You for this. Thank You for being with me to bring me here. Thank You for caring about what I care about." Let yourself linger in genuine thanks. There's no rush. As Paul writes, "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, ESV). Thanksgiving and joy belong together—they deepen each other. What else do you want to thank Him for today? Let it come.
My Concerns
End by asking Him to help you hold this joy well. You might ask Him to help you stay humble, to remember where it came from. Ask Him to give you generosity—the kind that shares joy with others rather than hoarding it. Ask Him to use this moment to draw you closer to Him, so that even as circumstances change, your foundation remains sure. You might pray, "Help me to remember this as a gift from You. Help me to share it. Help me to trust You with what comes next." There's no need to dim your celebration with worry, but you can ask Him to steady you, to keep you close, to help you bring Him along into whatever unfolds. As Jesus teaches, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you" (Matthew 7:7, ESV). He welcomes your asking. Bring your hopes and your care for what comes next to Him now.
