Midday Discernment: Finding Jesus in Your Next Step
A prayer guide for pausing at midday to bring your crossroads—whether big or small—to Jesus and listen for His direction. This guide uses the ACTS framework to help you move from confusion toward clarity, grounded in the confidence that Jesus cares about the specific path ahead of you.

Adoration
Begin by remembering who you're talking to. Jesus isn't distant from your decision; He's already walking the path ahead. As you pause here in the middle of your day, let your heart settle on His nature. You might pray about His wisdom—how He sees what you cannot, how He has never been caught off guard. The writer of Proverbs knew this: "The Lord established the earth by wisdom, and the heavens by understanding" (Proverbs 3:19, ESV). He doesn't figure things out as He goes. He moves with complete knowledge and perfect timing. Spend a moment naming what draws you to Him in this moment. Is it His faithfulness? His gentleness? His clarity? Talk to Jesus about why you trust Him enough to bring this decision to Him at all.
Confession
Here's the honest part: you might feel stuck because you're trying to see the whole path at once, or because you're afraid of choosing wrong. You might even be hesitant to ask for help, worried that needing guidance means you've failed somehow. That's not true. Admitting "I don't know what's next" is not weakness—it's where wisdom begins. Jesus said, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5, NIV). He doesn't shame you for asking. But take a moment to confess where you might be holding back—where you're trying to figure this out alone, or where you're afraid to hear what He might say. Talk to Him about any resistance in your heart. What are you afraid might happen if you truly surrender this to Him?
Thanksgiving
Even in uncertainty, there is something to be grateful for. You might thank Jesus for the fact that you're not alone in this—that He invites you to ask. You might be grateful for how He's guided you before, even in small ways you didn't recognize at the time. The psalmist wrote, "You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy" (Psalm 16:11, ESV). His presence itself is the gift, even before the answer comes. Take time to name one or two ways He's shown up for you—maybe recently, maybe long ago. Thank Him for those moments. Thank Him for being the kind of God who doesn't make you guess, but who speaks to those who listen.
My Concerns
Now bring your specific question to Jesus. Not in vague terms, but clearly: What is it you need direction about? Hold it before Him and ask. You might say, "Jesus, I'm uncertain about [this specific thing]. I'm asking You to show me the way forward." Then listen—not for a booming voice, but for the gentle settling of peace, the recurring thought, the wise counsel of someone you trust, the circumstances that open or close. Jesus promised, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:27, NIV). You belong to Him. He knows how to reach you. Ask Him to make His direction clear—not someday, but in the coming hours and days. Ask Him for peace as you wait. And ask for the courage to take the next small step when He shows it to you.
