Adoration
Begin by turning your attention to who Jesus is. He is not distant from you in this moment of uncertainty. He is the one who knows the beginning and the end, who sees what you cannot yet see. As you settle in, you might whisper His name or simply acknowledge His presence. The Psalms tell us, "The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand" (Psalm 37:23-24, NIV). Jesus doesn't just observe your path—He steadies it. Spend a moment honoring Him for His attentiveness to your life. You might thank Him for being a God who cares enough to guide, not a God who leaves you to navigate alone.
Confession
Now bring honesty into this moment. Is there a choice you've already made that you're asking Him to bless after the fact, rather than seeking His will first? Are you afraid to hear what He might say? Sometimes we hesitate to ask for guidance because we suspect the answer might cost us something. That's real, and it's okay to name it. Jesus says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5, NIV). Notice—He doesn't shame the asking. You can tell Him where your trust feels thin, where you'd rather control the outcome. Confession here isn't about judgment; it's about clearing the air so you can hear Him more clearly.
Thanksgiving
Even in the midst of uncertainty, there is ground for gratitude. Pause and think: Where has Jesus guided you before? What decision or direction in your past do you now see as His hand at work? He has not abandoned you. You might recall a time when the path became clear, or when a door closed and a better one opened. "Every good and perfect gift is from above" (James 1:17, NIV)—including the gift of past guidance that showed you His faithfulness. Thank Him for the ways He has led you, even when you didn't recognize it at the time. This remembering is not distraction from your current question; it's the foundation that lets you trust Him now.
My Concerns
Now bring your specific need. What decision or direction are you seeking? Speak it plainly to Jesus. You don't need perfect words. Tell Him what you're weighing, what concerns you, what you hope for. He invites this directness: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6, NIV). After you've laid it out, ask Him: What do you want me to see? What wisdom do you have for me? Then be quiet for a moment. Guidance often comes not as a thunderbolt but as a gentle settling, a quiet knowing, or sometimes as a verse or a memory that surfaces. Stay open. You might also ask: Who should I talk to? What step should I take next? Jesus often guides us through counsel, circumstances, and the stirring of His Spirit within us. Trust that He will answer—perhaps not in this prayer time alone, but as you move forward, watching for His guidance to unfold.
