Morning Guidance: Seeking Direction with Jesus
A gentle prayer guide for morning hours when you're seeking direction or clarity about what comes next. This guide helps you bring your questions and uncertainties to Jesus, trusting that He speaks and leads those who listen.
Morning
Need direction
5–12 min
Adoration
Begin by noticing who Jesus is before you notice what you need. He is not a vending machine for answers; He's a shepherd who knows the terrain ahead. You might pray something like: "Jesus, You are the Light that guides every step. You know the way before I do. I trust that You see what I cannot."
Take a moment to sit with this truth: as it says in Proverbs 16:9, "The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps." Your plans matter to Him—not because He needs your wisdom, but because He loves you enough to walk with you through them. Spend a few moments acknowledging His presence with you right now, in this morning hour, already aware of where you're headed.

Confession
Before you ask for direction, it's worth pausing to notice if you're carrying any hesitation about trusting His guidance. Maybe you've ignored His leading before. Maybe you're afraid His answer won't match what you want. Maybe you're tired of waiting and want to rush ahead on your own.
Talk to Jesus about these things without shame. The Bible reminds us, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, ESV). This includes confessing our resistance to His wisdom, our impatience, our desire to control the outcome. You don't need to earn the right to ask for guidance—you simply need to come honestly, as you are.

Thanksgiving
Even in uncertainty, there is much to thank Him for. Thank Jesus for the fact that you don't have to figure this out alone. Thank Him for the guidance He's already given you—the people, the circumstances, the small moments of clarity that have brought you to this point.
The Psalmist writes, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you" (Psalm 32:8, ESV). What a gift—that His eye is upon you. Thank Him for His willingness to pay attention, to notice you, to speak. Thank Him that seeking His guidance is never foolish or weak; it's the wisest thing you can do.

My Concerns
Now bring your specific question before Jesus. You don't need flowery language—just honesty. What decision are you facing? What direction feels unclear? What do you need wisdom about? Lay it out plainly: "Jesus, I need to know..."
Then ask Him to make His way clear. You might pray, "Show me what I'm missing. Quiet the noise so I can hear You. Give me peace about the right direction, and make me brave enough to follow it." Remember James 1:5: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him" (ESV). After you ask, sit quietly for a moment. Sometimes guidance doesn't arrive as a thunderbolt—it arrives as a gentle knowing, a sense of peace about one path, or a persistent thought that keeps returning. Trust that Jesus is answering, even if the answer unfolds slowly.
