Morning Prayer Through Difficulty
A gentle prayer guide for mornings when you're facing something hard. This guide walks you through adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication—giving you space to bring your struggle to Jesus and find steadiness before the day begins.
Morning
Going through something hard
7–12 min
Adoration
Begin by turning your attention toward Jesus, even though this morning feels heavy. You don't have to feel victorious or strong right now—just honest. Start by naming something true about who he is. Maybe it's his faithfulness, his closeness to the brokenhearted, or simply that he sees you. As the Psalmist writes, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18, ESV). Take a moment and speak to Jesus about his character—what aspect of who he is feels most real to you in this moment? You might pray, "Jesus, you are faithful even when I'm not," or "You are with me in this." Let your words be simple and true.
Confession
There's often something tangled inside us when we're facing difficulty—maybe frustration with God, or shame about how we're responding, or doubt creeping in at the edges. None of this disqualifies you from his presence. In fact, Jesus invites us to bring it all to him. He says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, ESV). What are you feeling beneath the surface of this difficulty? Anger? Fear? Disappointment? Talk to Jesus about it. You don't need to fix it or soften it—just bring it. "Jesus, I'm struggling with..." is enough. He already knows; confession is simply you being honest with him.
Thanksgiving
Even in hard mornings, there are small mercies—mercies you might almost miss. Maybe it's the fact that you woke up. Maybe someone spoke a kind word yesterday. Maybe you have breath in your lungs and another day to turn toward him. The apostle Paul writes from prison, "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice" (Philippians 4:4, ESV). He doesn't mean pretend the difficulty isn't real—he means find the thread of goodness even now. Take a moment to name one thing, however small, that you're grateful for. It might feel strange alongside the difficulty, but gratitude and sorrow can coexist. Thank Jesus for it.
My Concerns
Now bring your need directly to him. You're facing something difficult, and you don't have to carry it alone. Jesus says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6, ESV). What do you need this morning? Courage? Clarity? Comfort? Endurance? The ability to take the next small step? Be specific. Don't worry about the right words—just tell him what you need. You might pray, "Jesus, I need your strength for today," or "Help me to trust you even though this is hard." Ask him to meet you in the specific difficulty you're facing, and to show you how to move forward.
