Adoration
Begin by turning your attention to Jesus Himself—not yet to your question, but to who He is. The Psalms tell us, "The Lord is my light and my salvation" (Psalm 27:1, ESV). Take a moment to acknowledge that He already sees what you cannot yet see. He is not distant from your uncertainty; He is present in it. You might tell Him: Jesus, I know You are wise. I know You care about the details of my life. I trust that You see the whole picture, even when I can only see the next step. Let yourself rest in the truth that He is trustworthy—not because you have figured everything out, yet, but because He has never been wrong.
Confession
Now bring your honest self to this moment. Confession here is not about sin, necessarily—it's about the weight you're carrying. You might be feeling torn between options, or afraid of choosing wrong. You might be frustrated that the path isn't clearer. Tell Jesus about that. As it says in Philippians 4:6 (ESV), "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Your anxiety, your doubt, your hesitation—these are not failures. They're invitations to lay them down. You might pray: Jesus, I'm uncertain. I'm worried I'll miss what You're showing me, or that I'll choose poorly. Help me be honest about what I'm afraid of, so I can stop carrying it alone.
Thanksgiving
Even in the midst of not knowing the way forward, there is ground for gratitude. Think back: Has Jesus guided you before? Has He ever shown you the next step at just the right moment? Give thanks for His faithfulness in your past. Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV) reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." You might thank Him for how He has already been at work, for doors He has opened, for people He has placed in your life, for wisdom you have already been given. Pause and name one way He has shown up for you. Thank Him for it.
My Concerns
Now bring your specific need before Him. This is where you ask. Be direct. Tell Jesus what you're trying to discern, what choice is before you, what guidance you're seeking. You don't need to use fancy words—just be clear about what matters. As Jesus Himself teaches in Matthew 7:7 (ESV), "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you." Ask Him to show you the next right step. Ask Him to quiet the noise so you can hear His voice—whether through Scripture, wise counsel, circumstances, or the still small prompting of His Spirit within you. You might pray: Jesus, I'm asking You to guide me toward [name your situation]. Show me what You see. Give me wisdom. Make the right path clear, and give me courage to take it. Then sit for a moment in silence. Not every answer comes in a rush. Sometimes guidance unfolds slowly, one step at a time. Trust that He is already answering.
