Seeking Wisdom for the Road Ahead

An evening prayer to bring a decision or uncertainty before Jesus, asking for clarity and courage to follow where He leads.

Evening Need direction
5–12 min

As the day settles, bring the question on your heart to Jesus. He invites you to lay your uncertainty at His feet and listen for His voice.

Adoration

Begin by turning your attention to who Jesus is — not primarily what you need from Him, but His character itself. He is the God who knows the end from the beginning, who sees what you cannot yet see. As you sit in the quiet of evening, you might acknowledge: Jesus, You are wisdom itself. You see the full path ahead when I can only see the next step. Let your mind rest for a moment on His steadiness. The prophet Isaiah wrote, "The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs" (Isaiah 58:11, NIV). Before you ask for guidance, simply receive the comfort that the One you're praying to has never been uncertain, never surprised, never lost. That is who you're talking to tonight.

Confession

Now, gently bring to Jesus the ways you've been carrying this decision alone. Maybe you've been anxious, trying to figure everything out by yourself. Maybe you've second-guessed His character or doubted that He cares about this particular choice. There's no shame in that — it's human. You might pray: Jesus, I confess that I've been holding this so tightly, afraid to trust that You're good. I've worried instead of waited. I've questioned instead of listened. The good news, which the apostle Paul reminds us, is this: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6, NIV). He's not disappointed in you for struggling. He's inviting you to set the burden down.

Thanksgiving

Take a moment to remember times when Jesus has guided you before — moments when the way became clear, or when you later understood why something happened. Thank Him for those moments. You might thank Him for the wisdom of people He's placed in your life, for Scripture that has spoken to you, for the still, small voice you've learned to recognize. Thank Him also for the very fact that you care about getting this right — that you want to follow Him and not just your own preferences. As the Psalmist wrote, "I will praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14, NIV). Your desire to seek His will is itself a gift from Him.

My Concerns

Now bring your specific question before Jesus. Name it clearly and simply — don't overcomplicate it. He knows what's weighing on you, but there's power in naming it aloud to Him. You might pray: Jesus, I'm standing at a crossroads with [name the decision]. I don't know which way to turn. Show me the path that leads toward You, toward life, toward what You're calling me into. Ask Him for clarity, for peace about the right direction, for courage to follow even if the path is not what you expected. And ask for patience — for trust that if the answer isn't coming tonight, He's still working. As James wrote, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5, NIV). You can trust that asking Him is already the right thing to do.
