When the Path Ahead Is Unclear
An evening prayer for times when uncertainty weighs on your heart. This guide helps you bring your confusion to Jesus, trust his vision when yours is blurry, and find rest in his steadiness.

I don't know what to pray

Adoration
Begin by noticing who Jesus is in the midst of your uncertainty. He is not confused. He is not caught off guard. As you sit with him now, you might acknowledge: Jesus, you see what I cannot see. You know the way forward even when I'm standing in fog. The psalmist reminds us, "I trust in you, O my God; do not let me be put to shame" (Psalm 25:2, ESV). There is something steady in knowing that Jesus is not waiting for you to have it all figured out before he loves you or guides you. He moves toward the uncertain with perfect clarity. Take a moment to simply recognize his presence with you in this uncertain season. You might whisper his name, or sit with the truth that he is completely aware of what unsettles your heart tonight.
Confession
Uncertainty can make us want to run—to grasp for control, to demand answers, or to doubt whether God is truly good. Bring that to him now without hiding. Where have you been trying to solve this alone? Where have you struggled to trust that his way might be better than your way? Jesus invites us to lay it down: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, ESV). There is no judgment here—only invitation. You don't have to pretend you have faith you haven't found yet. Simply tell Jesus what you're carrying: your fear, your desire to control the outcome, your doubt, your weariness. He is listening.
Thanksgiving
Even in uncertainty, there are steady things. Think about what has held true for you, what you can still trust. Perhaps it's Jesus' faithfulness in the past, or a person who has stood by you, or simply that you woke up today. The apostle Paul writes from his own seasons of confusion: "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice" (Philippians 4:4, ESV). You can give thanks for small things—for breath, for this quiet moment, for the fact that your uncertainty doesn't surprise or disappoint him. Thank Jesus for specific moments when you've sensed his steadiness, even recently. Gratitude doesn't require having all the answers; it simply recognizes the goodness that is still present.
My Concerns
Now bring your specific uncertainty to Jesus. Not in vague terms, but with the details that keep you awake. What decision weighs on you? What do you need clarity about? What are you afraid might happen? Jesus wants to hear it. You might pray something like: *Jesus, I don't know what to do about... I'm afraid that... I need wisdom about...* As you name it, remember that he promises: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5, ESV). Ask him for the next small step—not necessarily the whole path, but what you need to see or know or do tomorrow. Ask for peace that doesn't depend on having all the answers. Ask him to quiet the noise in your mind and help you hear his still, small voice.
