When You Don't Know What Comes Next

An evening prayer for when uncertainty settles in and you need to lay your questions before Jesus rather than carry them alone into the night.

Evening I don't know what to pray
5–12 min

As evening settles around you, bring the weight of what you don't know to Jesus — He's present in the uncertainty with you.

Adoration

Begin by sitting with the One who is not uncertain. Jesus knows what tomorrow holds, and He is present with you right now in this moment of not-knowing. You don't have to have all the answers — He does. As you settle into prayer, let yourself notice His steadiness. Tell Him what draws you to trust Him, even when your own path feels unclear. Maybe it's something you've seen Him do before, or a quality of His character that stands out to you. The prophet Isaiah reminds us that God's thoughts are not our thoughts, His ways not our ways — and yet He calls Himself close to the brokenhearted. "For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face" (1 Corinthians 13:12, NIV). You can praise Him for the parts you do understand, and for the grace to live with mystery.

Confession

Uncertainty can make us grip tighter, try harder, or slip into worry. Take a moment to notice where you've been leaning on your own understanding instead of resting in His. Maybe you've second-guessed yourself, or felt ashamed of not having a clear answer. Maybe you've tried to control outcomes or convince yourself you should already know. Jesus is not surprised by any of this. He invites you to name it gently: "I don't know, and I'm afraid" is a true thing to say to Him. There's no shame in the unknown — only in staying isolated with it. As it says in 1 Peter 5:7, you can cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. Tell Him where you've been carrying weight that was never meant to be yours alone.

Thanksgiving

Even in the uncertainty, there are solid ground beneath your feet. Thank Jesus for what you do know to be true — perhaps a person who loves you, a strength that has held you before, a promise from Scripture that has felt real. Thank Him for bringing you to this moment of honesty instead of letting you live in pretense. Thank Him for the fact that your not-knowing does not separate you from His care. "The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear?" (Psalm 27:1, NIV). He hasn't left you in the dark to figure this out alone. Spend a few moments naming the small certainties, the steady things, the reasons your heart can rest even when your mind is full of questions.

My Concerns

Now bring your uncertainty directly to Jesus. Not as a problem to solve, but as something to surrender. You might pray something like: "Jesus, I don't know what this means or what to do next, and I'm laying that down with You tonight." Ask Him for peace — not answers necessarily, but the kind of peace that can live alongside questions. Ask Him to guide your next step, even if you can only see one step ahead. Ask for wisdom to know whether you're being called to wait, to act, or to seek counsel. As James writes, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5, NIV). Tell Him what you need most right now — clarity, calm, courage, companionship — and ask Him to meet you there.
