When You're Caught Between

A midday prayer for moments when you're unsure of your next step. This guide creates space to bring your uncertainty to Jesus and listen for clarity.

Midday I don't know what to pray
5–12 min

Welcome. Whatever is unclear right now—a decision, a direction, a feeling—you can lay it down here with Jesus. Let's pray through this together.

Adoration

Start by simply noticing Jesus as He is. He is not confused. He doesn't rush. As the psalmist writes, "I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken" (Psalm 16:8, ESV). In this midday moment, take a breath and tell Jesus what draws you to trust Him—even when you don't have all the answers. You might whisper, "Jesus, you see what I cannot. You know what comes next." Or simply sit with the truth that He is steady when everything in you feels uncertain. Let that steadiness become real to you for a few moments. What is one thing about His character that feels most true right now—His wisdom, His faithfulness, His gentleness? Speak that back to Him.

Confession

Now bring your uncertainty into the open. Not as a failure, but as a place where you need Him. Sometimes when we're unsure, we try to white-knuckle our way to clarity or we get stuck blaming ourselves for not knowing. You might find yourself here too. Gently, tell Jesus about that—the fear underneath the confusion, the ways you've been hard on yourself, the places where you've doubted His presence. He knows already. There's no judgment in naming it. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, ESV). Your uncertainty isn't a sin, but anything you're carrying alongside it—anxiety you're clinging to, control you're grasping for—can be released here. What do you need to lay down?

Thanksgiving

Even in the unsure places, there is something to be grateful for. You might not see it yet, but it's there. Perhaps it's the fact that you're willing to ask Jesus for help. Maybe it's a person who's standing with you, or a truth about God that has held before and can hold now. Jesus invites us to "rejoice always; again I will say, Rejoice" (Philippians 4:4, ESV)—not because everything is settled, but because He is present. Take a moment to name one or two things you're genuinely grateful for today, even small ones. The coffee that warmed your hands this morning. A conversation that mattered. The fact that you're here, bringing this to Jesus. Mention them to Him. Let gratitude soften the edges of your uncertainty.

My Concerns

Here's where you ask. You don't have to have perfect words. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6, ESV). Tell Jesus what you need—clarity, courage, a sign, peace while you wait, wisdom for a decision, or simply the ability to trust Him one more day. You might say, "Show me the next step," or "Help me wait without falling apart," or "I'm ready to move forward—please guide me." Be honest about what you're asking for. Then, if it feels right, ask Him to help you hold your uncertainty loosely—to live in the "not yet" without it consuming you. Rest in the truth that seeking Him is itself a form of clarity.
