When You're Not Sure — A Midday Prayer
A gentle prayer guide for moments when uncertainty clouds your path. This midday pause invites you to bring your questions to Jesus and find steadiness in His presence, even when the way forward isn't clear.
Midday
I don't know what to pray
5–12 min
Adoration
Start by turning your attention toward Jesus, not toward your uncertainty. He is steady when you are not. You might whisper or speak aloud: *Jesus, I come to you now because you are constant. Nothing about my confusion surprises you or shakes who you are.* As the psalmist writes, "The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?" (Psalm 27:1, ESV). Even in this moment of not-knowing, you are held by someone who sees the whole picture. Jesus is trustworthy not because everything is clear to you, but because He is utterly worthy of trust. Take a breath and let that land.
Confession
Now, gently open your hands about what lives underneath the uncertainty. Sometimes we're unsure because we're afraid to admit what we really want, or afraid we're not enough to handle what comes next. You might pray: *Jesus, I confess that uncertainty frightens me. I want to control what I cannot control. Forgive me for the times I've doubted your goodness because the path isn't clear.* There is no shame here—only honesty. As it says in 1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (ESV). Bring your fear into the light. You don't have to pretend clarity you don't feel.
Thanksgiving
Even in uncertainty, there is ground to stand on. You might thank Jesus for small things: *I'm grateful you haven't left me, even now. Thank you for people who believe in me. Thank you that I don't have to see the whole path to take the next step with you.* Philippians 4:4 reminds us to "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice" (ESV)—not because everything is resolved, but because you belong to someone faithful. Notice one thing today that has held firm: a friend's kindness, your own resilience, God's Word, a promise kept. Name it. Let gratitude steady you as much as certainty would.
My Concerns
Now bring your actual need before Jesus. Be specific about what you're unsure about—a decision, a relationship, a next step, a fear about the future. You might pray: *Jesus, I don't know what to do about [name the thing]. I'm asking you to guide me. Show me the next right step, even if it's just the very next one. Give me wisdom. Calm the noise in my head so I can hear you.* Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths" (ESV). You don't need certainty about tomorrow—you need Jesus today. Ask Him for one thing: clarity about the next small step, peace in the waiting, or courage to move forward even without all the answers.
