When You're Not Sure What Comes Next

An evening prayer for uncertainty. A gentle guide to bring your questions, doubts, and the weight of not knowing to Jesus—and to listen for His steadiness in the dark.

Evening I don't know what to pray
5–12 min

As evening settles around you, bring everything you're uncertain about to Jesus. He invites you to lay it down—not because you have to have it figured out, but because He does.

Adoration

Begin by turning toward Jesus Himself, not yet toward your questions. Notice what steadies you about who He is. He is not uncertain. He is not caught off guard by the confusion you're carrying. As the writer of Hebrews reminds us, Jesus is "the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8, ESV)—unchanging, reliable, present even when everything around you feels foggy.

Take a moment and tell Him what you admire about His character. Maybe it's His patience. Maybe it's the way He knows what's ahead. Maybe it's simply that He's here, listening to you right now. You might pray something like, "Jesus, I'm glad you don't have to wonder or second-guess. I'm grateful that you see what I can't see yet."

Confession

Now gently name what uncertainty has stirred in you—not as failure, but as honesty. Perhaps you've been spinning in worry, trying to figure everything out alone. Maybe you've doubted that God is good when the path isn't clear. Or you've felt ashamed of not knowing. All of that belongs here.

Jesus knows the difference between honest confusion and the distance we create from Him. He is not disappointed by your questions. As He said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, ESV). You can tell Him where you've carried this weight alone, where you've feared trusting Him with the unknown. There's no judgment waiting—only the kindness of someone who sees you and still draws near.

Thanksgiving

Even in uncertainty, there is ground to stand on. Notice one true thing: that you're still here. That you reached for prayer. That Jesus hasn't left you. Give thanks for the pieces of your life that are solid—relationships, small mercies, past times when He came through. Thank Him for the not-knowing too, if you can, because it's teaching you something about trust.

You might pray, "Thank you, Jesus, that I don't have to see the whole road to take the next step. Thank you that my uncertainty doesn't surprise you. Thank you for being faithful when I can't feel my way forward." Let gratitude—even small gratitude—shift something in your chest.

My Concerns

Now bring your specific uncertainty before Him. Not as a problem to solve alone, but as something to lay at His feet. Tell Him what you need to know, what you're afraid might happen, what you hope for. Be specific and honest. Ask Him to give you peace that doesn't depend on having all the answers—the kind of peace that "transcends all understanding" and will "guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7, ESV).

Ask Him to show you the next faithful step, even if it's small. Ask for trust where fear creeps in. Ask to feel His presence in the dark. And ask Him to help you remember, when morning comes, that He was here all along. You might say, "Jesus, help me trust you with what I can't see. Show me what you're inviting me to do right now. Give me peace." Then sit with Him a moment longer—no rush to have it all figured out.
