When You're Not Sure What Comes Next
An evening prayer for times when uncertainty weighs on you. This guide walks you through naming what feels unclear, releasing anxiety to Jesus, and finding steady ground in His faithfulness—even when the path ahead isn't visible.

I don't know what to pray

Adoration
Begin by turning your attention to who Jesus is—not as someone who solves all your uncertainty instantly, but as someone who walks steadily even when the way is dark. Think of how the psalmist says, 'The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?' (Psalm 27:1, ESV). Jesus doesn't ask you to see the whole path; He asks you to trust the one walking beside you.
You might pray something like: Jesus, tonight I bring my uncertainty to you. I'm drawn to your steadiness. You know what I don't know. You see what's hidden from me. Help me rest in the truth that you are trustworthy, even when I can't yet see the way forward.

Confession
Now gently name what's happening inside. Uncertainty can pull us toward anxiety, toward grasping for control, toward doubt about whether God is really good. There's no judgment here—only honesty. As it says in 1 Peter 5:7, 'Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you' (ESV). He doesn't turn away from your worry or your questions.
Take a moment to tell Jesus what uncertainty has stirred in you today. Where have you felt tempted to worry rather than wait? Where have you wanted to rush ahead or pull back instead of simply following? You might say: I confess that I've been trying to see the whole picture. I've doubted whether your care extends to this particular unknown. Help me let go of the need to control what I can't see.

Thanksgiving
Even in uncertainty, there are grounds for gratitude. Look back at how Jesus has been faithful to you before—not because He prevented hard things, but because He was present through them. As Paul writes, 'I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and all circumstances, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need' (Philippians 4:11-12, ESV). That secret? Jesus Himself.
Lift your eyes for a moment and give thanks for times He's guided you through fog before. Thank Him for small certainties you do have—people who love you, breath in your lungs, another day to walk with Him. You might pray: Jesus, I'm grateful that even now, in this unclear season, you haven't left me. Thank you for the ways you've shown up before. Thank you for steady ground beneath my feet, even when I can't see far ahead.

My Concerns
Now ask Jesus for what you need. Not for Him to instantly clear the fog—though He can—but for what will hold you steady while you wait. Ask for a quiet mind. Ask for trust. Ask for the next small step to become visible. As Jesus teaches us, 'Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you' (Matthew 7:7, ESV). He welcomes your asking.
Bring the specific uncertainty to Him now. You might pray: Jesus, I'm asking for wisdom about what's unclear to me. Not for certainty about things I can't control, but for clarity about my next faithful step. Calm my racing thoughts. Help me sleep well tonight, knowing that tomorrow's unknowns are already known to you. And help me trust—really trust—that whatever comes, you'll be there.
