When You're Not Sure What Comes Next

A midday prayer for moments when you're standing at a crossroads and the way forward isn't clear. This guide will help you bring your uncertainty to Jesus and listen for his steadying presence.

Midday I don't know what to pray
5–12 min

You've paused in the middle of your day because something feels unclear. That pause is wisdom—bring that uncertainty to Jesus right now, and let him meet you in it.

Adoration

Start by remembering who Jesus is, even when your own path feels foggy. He is the one who sees what you cannot see. As the psalmist writes, "The heavens declare the glory of God" (Psalm 19:1, ESV)—and that same God sees every detail of your life with perfect clarity. Talk to Jesus about his nature as the one who knows what lies ahead. You might say something like, "Jesus, you see tomorrow. You see what I'm choosing between. I trust that you're not confused, even when I am." Let that truth settle into you for a moment. He is not surprised by your uncertainty.

Confession

Here's a gentle invitation: talk to Jesus about what makes uncertainty hard for you. Is it fear of choosing wrong? The weight of responsibility? A feeling that you should already know what to do? There's no judgment here—Jesus knows your heart already. He invites you to be honest. As he told his disciples, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, NIV). Your weariness from not knowing—he sees it and welcomes it. You might pray, "I'm tired of being unsure. I'm afraid of making a mistake. Help me lay that down." No need for perfect words. Just truthfulness.

Thanksgiving

Before you move forward, pause to notice one thing: you're not facing this alone. Jesus is with you in the not-knowing. Thank him for that presence. Thank him for moments when he has guided you before—times when clarity did come, or when a wrong turn became a learning. As Paul wrote, "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4, NIV)—not because everything is decided, but because he is here. You might pray, "Thank you that you walk with me even in confusion. Thank you that I don't have to figure this out alone." Small gratitudes open the door to trust.

My Concerns

Now bring your actual need before Jesus. Be specific. What decision are you facing? What situation has you stuck? You don't need to have it perfectly framed—just lay it out. Jesus invites you to "ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you" (Matthew 7:7, NIV). Ask him for clarity, for wisdom, for courage to move even without perfect certainty. Ask him to quiet the noise so you can hear his voice. You might pray, "Show me the next right step. Give me wisdom. Help me trust you even if clarity takes time." And then—this matters—ask him to help you rest in not knowing right now. Sometimes the answer isn't "decide today." Sometimes it's "wait and watch a little longer, and I'll guide you." Whatever he is inviting, bring that request honestly.
