When You're Standing at the Crossroads: A Midday Prayer for Uncertainty
A prayer guide for the middle of your day when you're not sure which way to turn. This guide walks you through honest conversation with Jesus about the fog ahead, inviting Him into your uncertainty rather than pretending you have it all figured out.
Midday
I don't know what to pray
5–12 min
Adoration
Begin by naming something true about Jesus that holds steady even when you don't. You might pray about His faithfulness—how He has guided you through confusion before, how His character doesn't shift when circumstances feel unclear. As the psalmist writes, "The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?" (Psalm 27:1, ESV). In this moment, let that steadiness sink in. Jesus doesn't panic when you're uncertain. He knows exactly where this day is heading. You might simply tell Him: I trust that You see what I cannot see right now. Spend a moment recalling a time when you moved through confusion and found His hand was there all along. That same hand is extended toward you today.
Confession
This is the place to be honest about the weight uncertainty carries. You might confess the fear that comes with not knowing—the temptation to rush a decision, to control what you can't see, or to doubt that God cares about the details of your confusion. You don't have to perform confidence you don't feel. Jesus invites you to lay it down: "Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7, ESV). There's no shame in not having answers. You might pray: I'm afraid. I want to trust, and some part of me does, but I'm also stuck. Invite Jesus to search your heart for any resistance to His guidance—any corner where you're white-knuckling control. He meets you there with gentleness, not judgment.
Thanksgiving
Even in the fog, there are gifts to notice. Thank Jesus for the clarity you do have—perhaps people around you, resources available, time to pray rather than having to decide this instant. Thank Him for the mystery itself, strange as that sounds. "For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face" (1 Corinthians 13:12, NIV). Uncertainty is part of what it means to walk by faith, not sight. You might offer gratitude for the pause this moment has given you—a reason to stop and actually talk to Jesus instead of moving on autopilot. Thank Him for loving you not because you have it all together, but because you're His. Let that sink deeper than your doubt.
My Concerns
Now bring your specific unsureness to Jesus. Don't hide it behind spiritual language. Tell Him exactly what you're unsure about—the choice, the timing, the next step, whether you're capable. Ask Him for what you actually need: clarity, peace, wisdom, courage, discernment. "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5, NIV). You might also ask Him to quiet the noise—the pressure to decide, the voices telling you that you should already know. Ask Him to speak, however He chooses. And ask for the grace to take the next smallest step when it becomes clear, rather than waiting for perfect certainty. Close by asking Him to meet you again tomorrow with the same faithfulness He shows today.
