When You're Standing at the Crossroads

A midday prayer guide for when uncertainty clouds your path. This guide creates space to lay your questions before Jesus, to listen for His steadiness, and to take the next small step—even when the full picture isn't clear yet.

Midday I don't know what to pray
5–12 min

Welcome. Right in the middle of your day, Jesus is here with you—and so is your honest uncertainty. Let's bring both to Him.

Adoration

Right now, in the middle of your day, pause and notice: Jesus is with you in this fog of uncertainty just as much as He would be in clarity. There's something steadying about bringing your confusion directly to Him rather than pretending you have it figured out. As it says in Proverbs, 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding' (Proverbs 3:5-6, ESV)—and notice that trust doesn't require you to see the whole path first.

Talk to Jesus about His character right now. You might say something like: 'Jesus, I'm not sure what's ahead, but I know You are trustworthy. You've guided me before. You don't ask me to see the future—You ask me to see You.' Let yourself rest in the fact that His nature doesn't change based on whether you feel certain or lost.

Confession

Uncertainty can make us feel like we've done something wrong, or like doubt is a failure of faith. Gently, bring that to Jesus too. You might pray: 'I confess that I sometimes treat confusion like a character flaw. I judge myself for not knowing. I'm sorry for the times I've turned away from You instead of turning toward You with my questions.'

Hear this: Jesus welcomed the disciples' doubts. Thomas asked hard questions. The father in Mark 9 cried out, 'I believe; help my unbelief!' (Mark 9:24, ESV). Your uncertainty doesn't disqualify you from His presence—it actually invites you deeper into honest conversation with Him. There's no need to perform confidence you don't feel.

Thanksgiving

Even in the middle of not knowing what comes next, there are things your heart knows to be true. Take a moment and notice them. Maybe it's a person who steadied you. Maybe it's a time He came through when you couldn't see how. Maybe it's simply that you're still here, still asking, still seeking.

You might pray: 'Thank You, Jesus, that even when I don't know the next step, I can look back and see Your faithfulness. Thank You that uncertainty doesn't mean You've abandoned me. Thank You that You're not waiting for me to have it all figured out before You meet me here.' As Paul wrote, 'Rejoice always...in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God' (Philippians 4:4-6, ESV). Thanksgiving and uncertainty can live in the same prayer.

My Concerns

Now bring your specific uncertainty to Jesus. Not as a problem you need to solve alone, but as something you're laying at His feet. You might say: 'Jesus, I don't know whether to... I can't see how... I'm confused about... and I need You to guide me.'

You don't have to ask for the answer to arrive instantly. Instead, ask Him for what you actually need right now: clarity about the next small step, peace while you wait, wisdom to listen for His voice, or courage to move forward even without the full picture. As James invites us, 'If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault' (James 1:5, ESV). Jesus loves to give you what you're asking for—sometimes it's direction, sometimes it's patience, sometimes it's simply the assurance that you're not alone in this.
