When You're Standing in the In-Between

A midday prayer for moments when clarity feels distant and the next step is unclear. This guide invites you to bring your uncertainty to Jesus and discover what it means to trust when you can't yet see.

Midday I don't know what to pray
5–12 min

Right now, in this midday pause, you don't have to pretend to know what comes next. Jesus meets you here, in the not-knowing.

Adoration

Begin by noticing what you do know—not what's uncertain, but what's true. Jesus is present with you right now, in this very moment of confusion. He is not confused by what confuses you. Take a breath and speak to Him about who He is: steady, patient, and deeply familiar with human uncertainty. You might pray about His character—perhaps His wisdom that sees what you cannot yet see, or His faithfulness in the lives of others who have walked through fog and found solid ground. As the apostle John writes, "Now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face" (1 Corinthians 13:12, NIV). Even in the unclear moments, you're looking at the face of someone who is entirely clear and entirely trustworthy. Let yourself sit with that for a moment. What about Jesus's nature anchors you, even now?

Confession

Uncertainty can stir up worry, impatience, or the urge to rush into a decision just to feel less stuck. It might tempt you toward doubt—not doubt in God, but doubt in His goodness toward you specifically. That's a very human place. There's no shame in naming it with Jesus. You might confess where you've been trying to manufacture clarity on your own, or where anxiety has been your compass instead of faith. The beautiful thing is that Jesus already knows the shape of your worry; He's inviting you to lay it down. As He says in Matthew 11:28, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (NIV). Your weariness from not-knowing is something He welcomes. Tell Him what you're carrying.

Thanksgiving

Even in uncertainty, there are gifts. Perhaps you're grateful for the people around you who've shown you kindness while you've been unsure. Maybe you're thankful that you recognize you need Jesus—that you haven't yet chosen a path hastily. You might give thanks for past moments when confusion eventually made sense, or for the way not-knowing has sometimes led you somewhere better than you expected. Give thanks, too, for the permission to wait—that you're allowed to not have answers yet. The Psalmist reminds us, "Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord" (Psalm 27:14, NIV). Waiting itself can be an act of trust. What small thing—or large thing—are you grateful for, even in this uncertain season?

My Concerns

Now bring your actual need before Jesus. You might ask Him for clarity—not necessarily a lightning-bolt answer, but a next small step. You might ask for peace while you wait, for patience with yourself, or for wisdom to distinguish between what's truly unclear and what you're simply afraid to choose. Ask Him to guard your heart from anxiety and to keep you from making decisions out of panic. You might ask for a sign, or simply for His presence to be enough until the sign comes. Remember Jesus's words: "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you" (Matthew 7:7, NIV). He invites your asking—not as burden, but as intimacy. What do you most need from Him right now?
